Mahatma Gandhi was scheduled to speak at the evening prayer service at Birla Bhawan in Delhi on January 30, 1948. At approximately 5:17 p.m., Nathuram Godse shot him to death simultaneously. Gandhiji, the priest of nonviolence, passed away, and the day of his death (30 January) became an annual Martyr’s Day celebration. The United Nations observes Martyrs’ Day as the International Day of Non-Violence.
