World Science Day is celebrated every year on 10 November by UNESCO to engage the public at large on the important role of science in society and emerging scientific issues. This day tries to unite all government officials, students, media etc. by highlighting the importance and relevance of science.
The theme of Science Day for the year 2020 is ‘Science for and with Society’. This year, UNESCO has adopted three key initiatives to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through a scientific approach: promoting international scientific cooperation, ensuring access to clean water and supporting ecological recovery.
The idea of celebrating Science Day was first presented at the ‘World Science Conference’ held in Budapest in the year 1999. Subsequently, this day was announced by UNESCO in the year 2001 and the first World Science Day was celebrated on 10 November 2002.
To this day, UNESCO has attempted to promote cooperation between scientists living in conflict-affected areas, the creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO) is an example of this.
